From Ripples to Waves: Water-Based Exercise in People with Cardiac and Respiratory Conditions

Cardiovascular exercise is vitally important for people with chronic cardiac and respiratory conditions to manage their symptoms, prevent health deterioration, and optimise their physical performance. But when breathlessness is the main symptom, the idea of making this population more breathless with exercise seems counterintuitive, particularly because when you can’t breathe, nothing else matters!

In this session, respiratory specialist physiotherapist Renae McNamara will explore the evidence, challenges, and benefits of water-based exercise, and consider the effect of immersion and hydrostatic pressure on people with these conditions.
You’ll gain the understanding, strategies and confidence to work with this population in the water, from rehabilitation settings through to community aqua fitness groups.
